Writing myths are like Chinese whisphers. By the time they’ve left their original source, they’ve changed meaning.

I’ve been writing online for 4 years now so I can vouch for every one of these myths I’m about to share.

Here are 12 that need to be debunked.

1. You need a niche

When I first started writing, I thought I needed to know exactly what I was writing about. I made lists and mind maps and painstakingly picked apart all the topics I thought I could add value to.

It was such a relief when I realised that I was the niche and that I don’t have to write about this topic or that topic for the rest of my life because I can write about anything I like.

2. Virality is a science

If there was a formula for going viral, someone would have bottled it and sold it to millions.

Many people preach they have the answers but it doesn’t matter what the platform is, there is no science for virality. Sure, there are certain factors that we can control to give ourselves the best chance but overthinking how to get a viral article will zap the fun out of the process and will inevitably lead to disappointment.
