Last month I went on a multi-day hike with some friends.

Packing for a multi-day hike is particularly challenging because it’s all about balancing having enough food, gas, and essential supplies with how much things weigh.

The one luxury item I always allow myself to take is a little treat for the last day.

Anything sweet, juicy, and delicious on the last day of a long hike is always a bonus so I’ve learned to pack whatever it takes to get me across the finish line regardless of how much it weighs. This time it was a simple orange.

As midday approached, we prepared our last lunch on the mountain. I ate my dehydrated risotto before eagerly peeling my juicy orange.

The first bite was almost too much to take. I closed my eyes and savoured every second.

I quickly put the next segment into my mouth and devoured it. Then another. And another.

Then I paused. I felt this urgent need to share it with my friends.

This wasn’t my intention but because it was so good I didn’t want to keep it for myself.
