Especially in today’s society
Viktor Frankl once said:
“When a person can’t find a deep sense of meaning, they distract themselves with pleasure”
Some turn to alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. Others use social media, porn, food, sex, exercise, work, or Netflix. I’ve turned to all of them at different times in my life.
Whatever my vice of choice at the time was, the underlying need for distraction was the same.
The trouble came when those distractions lost their shine and a deeper, rawer wound was revealed.
This is when I started taking too many drugs, working 16 hours a day, smoking too many cigarettes, staying at the bar after hours, sleeping around, and numbing myself in front of a screen.
As a result, my mental health suffered and a sense of apathy and disdain crept in.
I had to take a real deep look at myself. I had to ask hard questions. And ultimately, I had to make some changes.
I decided to stop focusing on what felt good in the moment and started focusing on where I felt uplifted and energised.
