The Best (& Worst) Realisation I Could Have Received

The best realization

My best writing comes when I run.

The worst realization

I don’t like running.

Reaction — f**k!

But it’s true, my best writing comes when I run. I can be hot, sweaty, out of breath, tight chested, winded, have the mother-of-all stitches, be red-faced, muddy, wet, tired, grumpy, and bemused at why I’m running, but I can’t escape the truth of that’s where some of my best ideas come from.

I’ve created characters, written whole dialogues, made long-lasting plot connections, downloaded punchy headline titles and I’ve even got the title to one of my books (Pancake Philosophy) whilst out running.

I don’t know how it works, I just know that it does.

Scrambling home

One thing remains and that is whenever a good idea does come while I’m out running, the quick scramble home begins as I try to remember it.

Then all of a sudden my achy legs and blurry eyes find an extra spring, a clearer vision and I run home much more easily.
