What I’m Happy to Spend Money On

Three things that I never take for granted

I don’t really care for nice clothes or fancy toys. I drive an 18-year-old VW polo and live in a one-bedroom bungalow on the outskirts of Cape Town.

My needs are very simple but there are three things I will always spend money on:

  • Good food
  • Good books
  • Travel

Good food

The adage “You are what you eat” has never been more true.

Ever since reading how much pesticides and glyphosate is in the foods found in supermarkets, I’ve committed to eating locally grown and organic produce.

It costs 3x as much but it’s grown in healthier soil, it’s free of harmful chemicals and it supports local farmers. So, it’s a win-win.

This became even more important to me in December last year as I was diagnosed with leaky gut syndrome.

It’s been proven that pesticides and glyphosate damage soil and kill healthy bacteria that help it flourish. The same happens in our guts when we eat foods containing these chemicals.

I am now in the process of repairing my gut lining, healing my gut fauna, and supporting my microbiome. It’s a long and drawn-out process but…
